CMA CALLS FOR CLEMENCY FOR DOCTOR AND NURSES

IN LIBYA

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is lending its support to an international campaign in support of a Palestinian physician and five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya.
We are appealing to the Libyan government through diplomatic channels to listen to the voices of health care providers around the world and throw out these sentences, said CMA President, Dr. Sunil Patel.
Dr. Ashraf Ahmad Jum'a and five nurses were recently found guilty of infecting more than 400 children with HIV in a hospital in Benghazi. Their conviction, and subsequent death sentences, came despite expert testimony at the trial that poor hygiene, including the reuse of infected equipment, was the likely cause of transmission.
Canada's physicians have been shocked by both the verdicts and the sentences in this case, added Dr. Patel. We are particularly concerned by the long confinement of these health professionals and the allegation that their confessions were obtained under torture.
The World Medical Association, of which the CMA is a member, has also issued an appeal to the Libyan authorities on behalf of the international physician community.

L'AMC LANCE UN APPEL À LA CLÉMENCE POUR UN MÉDECIN

ET DES INFIRMIÈRES EN LIBYE

L'Association médicale canadienne (AMC) participe à une campagne internationale à l'appui d'un médecin palestinien et de cinq infirmières bulgares condamnés à mort en Libye.
«Nous demandons au gouvernement de la Libye, par les voies diplomatiques, d'écouter les prestataires de soins de santé du monde entier et de révoquer ces sentences», a déclaré le président de l'AMC, le Dr Sunil Patel.
Le Dr Ashraf Ahmad Jum'a et cinq infirmières ont été récemment reconnus coupables d'avoir infecté plus de 400 enfants par le VIH dans un hôpital de Benghazi. Ils ont été reconnus coupables même si les experts qui ont témoigné au procès ont affirmé que la mauvaise hygiène, y compris la réutilisation de matériel infecté, était probablement la cause de la transmission du virus.
«Les verdicts et les sentences imposés dans cette affaire ont perturbé les médecins du Canada, a ajouté le Dr Patel. La longue période de détention de ces professionnels de la santé et les allégations selon lesquelles leurs aveux auraient été obtenus par la torture nous préoccupent particulièrement.»
L'Association médicale mondiale, dont l'AMC est membre, a aussi lancé un appel aux autorités libyennes au nom des milieux médicaux internationaux.
