Motivated by misery?
Teresa Craig waited until she heard her husband snoring to plunge a kitchen knife twice into his chest and twice more into his back, the Crown argued he'll prove at the start of Craig's first-degree murder trial yesterday.
And her motive wasn't physical abuse because he never hit her, Jason Neubauer told the jury.
It was her misery at living in an isolated RV and running a failing business with a man she'd grown to hate.
"Her answers change from, 'I don't know why I did it' to 'Maybe there's some evil in me,' " Neubauer said. "Her third answer is she was sick and tired. She was unhappy with her life.
"The fourth answer was hate -- simple hate."
Jack Craig, 54, was found bleeding to death in the RV parked at their Donnelly Rd. gas bar early March 31, 2006. Their son, Martin, 10, slept nearby.
Jack Craig later died in hospital.
Neighbour Charmaine Crockett testified Craig woke her about 3 a.m. by ringing her doorbell again and again.
"She said, 'Help me, please help me, call 911, I've killed my husband,' " Crockett said.
The jury heard that call yesterday.
"I'm not happy with my life -- I killed my husband," Craig told the operator.
"Does he hit you?" the operator asked.
"No, he doesn't hit me," Craig said. "I'm not happy. I'm sick of my life. Everything is wrong. Our business is not doing good. I'm so depressed."
Later, the operator said her husband is still alive.
"I'm so sad to hear that," Craig replied, her face blank, according to Crockett.
Teresa, a Malaysian of Chinese descent, met Jack Craig though a dating service and moved to Canada to marry him in 1995, Neubauer said.
The couple settled in B.C.
Jack Craig had a raspy voice, strong opinions and an assertive personality.
FOUGHT REGULARLY
They fought about everything, although Teresa said she was the one who'd walk away.
She twice took her son and left.
In 2005, she threatened suicide with a knife and said she wanted to return to Malaysia alone.
Instead, the couple moved to the Kemptville area.
By March 2006, their financial situation was bleak, Neubauer said. They'd run out of gas to sell and were refused a loan.
That night, Craig wept as she told Crockett about her life and her fears for Martin.
Questioned by Craig's lawyer, Richard Morris, Crockett said Craig seemed drained and sad, and that she never feared her. She volunteered that Craig must have "snapped" after years of depression.
"I thought I would feel differently having someone in my house who did that," Crockett said. "I feel nothing but sympathy for her."
